Sequestration in a nutshell?

$85 billion in automatic, across-the-board cuts went into effect on March 1, 2013. It may not really be “across-the-board,” according to some news reports. Politicians are rushing to save their pet projects – no surprise there. Sequestration came along with one trillion dollars in previously scheduled federal cuts and $250 billion in state budget cuts.

Top 50 programs affected (ABC News), Air travel security checks, national weather forecasts, wildfires, crops, meat and poultry inspections, Prisons, background checks, FBI and immigration, passports, metal illness, homelessness, WIC & Head Start, Indian health care, housing, Indian education, Native American tribal development, mine inspection, nuclear cleanup – to mention a few.

Turns out that within the top 50 programs affected by political posturing, several programs are very hard hits for American Indians (who just happen to be the most under-represented population in America.) Copyright 2013, Mitch Battese
